What is AAC?

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to methods of communication that support or replace speech for individuals who have difficulty speaking or understanding spoken language. AAC systems can be used by individuals with a range of conditions, including developmental disabilities, acquired brain injuries, and speech or language disorders. These systems enable individuals to express their needs, thoughts, and ideas, enhancing their ability to participate in daily life.

There are two main types of AAC: low-tech and high-tech systems. Both types aim to facilitate communication, but they differ in complexity and how they are used.

Choosing the Right AAC System

The choice of AAC system depends on the individual’s specific needs, preferences, and abilities. Some people may benefit from a low-tech approach, while others may require high-tech systems for more advanced communication. A trained speech-language pathologist can assess the person’s needs and recommend the most suitable AAC tools and strategies.

It is important to remember that AAC is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It may take time for individuals to learn how to use these systems effectively, and their needs may change over time. Support from family, educators, and communication professionals is key to ensuring success.
