Common Characteristics of Autism

Some of the most common characteristics of Autism include:

Social Communication Challenges:

  • Difficulty understanding and interpreting social cues (e.g., facial expressions, body language, tone of voice).
  • Limited or unusual use of gestures, facial expressions, or eye contact.
  • Trouble with back-and-forth conversations or difficulty initiating and maintaining social relationships.

Repetitive Behaviours:

  • Engaging in repetitive actions such as hand-flapping, rocking, or repeating the same phrase over and over.
  • A strong preference for routines and resistance to change.
  • Highly focused or intense interests in specific topics.

Sensory Sensitivities:

  • Sensitivity to lights, sounds, textures, or smells, which can sometimes cause distress or discomfort.

Language Delays or Differences:

  • Some children may be nonverbal, while others may have delayed language development.
  • Atypical patterns of speech, such as echolalia (repeating words or phrases) or literal interpretations of language.
